About the role

The Operations Manager provides both strategic and operational leadership of Open Heart International (OHI), a ministry of Adventist HealthCare Limited. This role is responsible for delivering OHI’s strategy and overseeing program delivery, financial sustainability and governance, while leading and supporting a small team of staff and volunteer project coordinators. Working closely with internal leaders, donors, medical partners and community stakeholders, the role ensures OHI’s international medical programs are well planned, culturally appropriate, and aligned to community needs, with strong oversight of risk, safeguarding and compliance.

A key focus of the role is the coordination of complex international medical programs across the South Pacific, including developing trip proposals, managing budgets, and overseeing end-to-end logistics such as travel, accommodation, medical supplies and volunteer engagement. This is a part-time position (two days per week), however additional days will be required on an ad hoc basis to support operational demands. The role will also involve periodic international travel to support program delivery, stakeholder engagement and partnership development within developing country contexts.

Who we’re looking for

You are a values-driven leader who is passionate about delivering meaningful impact through healthcare. You bring experience working across complex, multi-stakeholder environments, ideally within international aid (ideally OHI), not-for-profit or healthcare settings.

You are equally comfortable working at a strategic level and getting into the operational detail, with strong capability in planning, coordination and delivery. You have experience working across diverse cultural contexts and are confident building relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, including clinicians, volunteers, donors, partners and government representatives.

This role is offered on a part-time basis (two days per week). You will need the flexibility to increase your days on an ad hoc basis to support operational demands, including during key program delivery periods.

You will also bring:

  • Experience coordinating programs, projects or operations within healthcare, international development or a related field
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships across local and international contexts
  • Experience managing logistics across travel, accommodation, supplies and workforce coordination
  • Demonstrated ability to work with limited resources and adapt in dynamic or developing environments
  • Sound financial and planning capability, including budgeting and reporting
  • A collaborative and hands-on leadership style, with experience supporting volunteers or small teams
  • Hold full Australian working rights, as visa sponsorship is not available for this role.

About Us

Open Heart International (OHI) is a medical outreach program established in 1985 by three dedicated clinicians at Adventist HealthCare who were driven by a desire to make a difference. Our primary mission is to provide specialised medical care to vulnerable communities in developing countries, addressing critical health needs that are often neglected. OHI conducts surgical projects, offering services such as cardiac, plastic, reconstructive, orthopaedic and women’s health surgeries.  The focus is on creating local self-sufficiency by equipping local medical teams with necessary resources and training, ultimately transforming lives and improving the quality of healthcare in these countries.

What to expect

Successful candidates will be required to complete a range of pre-employment checks and assessments. These vary and could include professional references, a national police check, working with children check, vaccination evidence, among others.
